March Break Jazz Camp (Grades 8-12)

The Halifax Music Co-Op is excited to announce that as part of its ongoing development of Youth Programming, we are launching our first ever March Break Youth Big Band Camp!

This is the only jazz camp for junior and high school age musicians in the Halifax Area during March break. Over the course of the week, young musicians will delve into the great music of the big band tradition, masterclasses taught by exemplary local musicians, ear training classes, theory and Jazz history taught by the amazing HMC Faculty! On Friday, community members, parents, and the students are invited to a one of a kind performance from the camp faculty. On Saturday, the students will perform material worked on during the week for parents and the community.

Throughout the week, students will also receive masterclasses taught by local professionals.

Who should apply?

We are looking for any intermediate level musician in grades 8-12. We ask that any applicants have at least 1 year of experience on their instrument before apply. Spots for each section in the ensemble will be limited and applicants will be selected based experience level and best fit. We will expect the following from any musician applying for the camp:

  • The ability to play F, Bb, and Eb concert major scale on their instrument
  • An understanding of basic music theory
  • Keyboard and Guitar players should be able to read chord changes and have a basic understanding of “comping” in the jazz idiom
  • Bass players should be able to read chord changes and have a basic understanding of how to create a walking bass line
  • Drummers should be able to “comp” in the jazz style as well as be able to play a few of the following styles:
    • Swing
    • Funk
    • Bossa Nova
    • Samba
    • Songo

Exceptions may be made upon the discretion of the camp Directors.

Where and when?

The camp and camp concerts will take place at the Halifax Music CO-OP  2164 Barrington Street. The Camp will run Monday to Friday from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Camp faculty will be on location at 8:30 AM for earlier drop offs.

Short breaks will be provided during the day and an hour will be provided for lunch. Meals are not included or available on-site, so packed lunches are suggested. A chaperoned walking group will travel to Scotia Square daily during lunch for interested parties.

A performance by the faculty will be open to the camp participants, parents, and community on Friday, March 16th from 5 PM to 6 PM

The final performance by the camp participants will take place on  Saturday, March 17th at 1 PM for parents and members of the community.

How do I sign up and how much will it cost?

Tuition for the March Break Youth Big Band Camp is $150.00 CDN and will be due on March 9th if your application is accepted.
